Some Scientific Writing Rules
1. If you can cut a word without affecting the message, do it!
2. “ Which” often refers to the immediately preceding word or phrase.
3. Generally accepted ideas should be written in the present tense. References to findings in the literature can be in either the present or the past tense; use present tense if you feel the finding is generally accepted.
When summarizing your own findings, use past tense.
Use present tense for your conclusion, speculation or suggestion.
4. Never claim you’re “the first in finding x” in your paper!
5. Never start a sentence with an abbreviated word, such as Ca2+, cAMP.
6. Avoid inventing new usage of word.
7. Never use oral English in your paper, such as “get, didn’t, can’t”. You could use “ obtain, did not, cannot” instead.
8. Avoid using long stream of nouns and compounded nouns as modifiers.
9. “and”, “or” should be used to link two equivalent phrases of parallel content and structure.
10. Avoid starting a sentence with “ And”, “So”. You could use “ Thus” instead of “So”.
