International Workshop - Latest advances in ion channel techniques applied to physiological problems

Date and time: September 12-16, 2008

The Physiological Society
International Workshop

Latest advances in ion channel techniques applied to physiological problems.

Shanghai , China
12-16 September 2008
A Workshop for young physiologists

- No registration fee
- Accommodation and meals provided by The Society 1
- Prizes for the three best posters

Participants receive one year's free Affiliate Membership of The Society 2

Aim: This workshop aims to provide PhD and early postdoctoral researchers with a unique opportunity to gain an appreciation of state-of-the-art techniques being used to study ion channels in a range of cell types. Seminars and tutorials, supported by hands-on practical sessions, will provide a fertile environment for productive interactions between speakers and participants, and encouraging the development of future collaborative links. There will be a major emphasis on small group work.   Attendees will learn about several aspects of physiological research, from quantitative pharmacology on single channels, through to the latest imaging techniques, be exposed to relating ion channel studies to drug discovery, and how to take their measurements into living animals. After our Workshop the students should fully understand the various techniques and appreciate their utility for physiological studies.

Target audience: We plan for 45 attendees, either PhD students or very early postdocs. Students will be selected on the basis of a case made in their application as well as an abstract of their poster. We will offer a limited number of travel/subsistence bursaries. Afterwards, all of the students will be expected to provide a brief report, including how they would like to apply what they have learned in this Workshop to their own research.

Please note: the deadline for applications for travel grants to attend this Workshop is 31 July 2008

1 For the duration of the Workshop only; cost of travel, from the participants' home to/from the Workshop, is not covered by The Society

2 Non-members only; providing participants meet The Society's Affiliate criteria [URL]
