  • During the above two photon mapping experiments, surprisingly we found that astrocytes, the “silent” cells (their number is similar or even greater to neurons in cortex), were responsive to visual stimuli, their calcium responses were highly feature selective, and their feature mapping was as precise as that of neurons. We further proved that the above unique behaviour of astrocytes served as the basis of precise neuron-astrocyte-vascular coupling in the functional columns (Science, second round revision).
  • Other related projects. Our technical and scientific progresses propel the functional studies in Sur lab. I participated in the following projects: multiple feature mapping in monocularly enucleated ferrets( J. Neurosci., 2007); functional screening of multiple genetically modulated mice by intrinsic optical imaging (Nature Neurosci., 2006); in vivo imaging of CaMKII activity in the primary visual cortex of ferrets using FRET; two photon calcium imaging in multiple gene knock out mice; orientation selectivity of inhibitory neurons in the primary visual cortex by two photon imaging; the influence of feedback pathways in the primary visual cortex by two photon imaging.
