Post-Doctoral Research Associate: Properties of Amorphous Chalcogenides

Department of Chemistry

£27,428 – £35,788 pa

The funds for this post are available for 2 years in the first instance

Applications are invited for a post-doctoral researcher to work with Professor Stephen Elliott on a collaborative project with the Universities of Surrey and Southampton which will develop chalcogenide materials for use in modern optoelectronics. The Cambridge team will work on ab initio computer modelling and materials simulation of chalcogenides.

It is already established that the electrical properties of chalcogenides are of great technological importance, e.g. in phase-change random-access memory. Likewise, the optical properties of chalcogenide materials are of interest, e.g. near- and mid-infrared transmission and non-linear properties.

This project will address the marriage of the established semiconductor technology of ion implantation with the emerging potential of chalcogenide glasses as electrically-active optoelectronic materials. The aim is to develop new optoelectronic devices by combining a theoretical understanding of the effects of ion implantation on the electronic properties of amorphous chalcogenide materials (obtained from first-principles computer simulations), with experimental results on ion-implanted materials.

Candidates should have (or be about to obtain) a PhD in computational chemistry, physics or materials science. Prior experience of performing ab initio molecular-dynamics simulations (preferably with the VASP code) is essential.

The post is available immediately. Applications should include a CV, publications list, contact details for three professional referees, and a completed form CHRIS/6 Parts I and III (downloadable from http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/offices/hr/forms/chris6/), and should be sent to Professor Stephen Elliott, Department of Chemistry, Lensfield Road, Cambridge CB2 1EW (email: sre1@cam.ac.uk). Potential applicants are encouraged to contact Professor Elliott informally for further information.
