School of Engineering and Materials Science

Cell and Tissue Engineering Group

Post-doctoral Research Assistant

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant to work with the Cell and Tissue Engineering group at the School of Engineering and Materials Science. The project is funded by a prestigious Arthritis UK grant awarded to Dr Tina Chowdhury.

The successful applicant will examine the role of the C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP) and mechanical conditioning on the modulation of osteoarthritis. Briefly, the project will determine the chondroprotective mechanisms of interaction between CNP and mechanical loading on downstream signalling mediators in an inflammatory model and test the following hypotheses:

- CNP and mechanical loading exert beneficial effects on matrix metabolism and have synergistic effects involving cGMP and PKG mechanisms.

- Both CNP and mechanical loading antagonize the effect of pro-inflammatory cytokines.

We seek a highly motivated individual with an interest in mechanobiology, cartilage biology and / or disease with proven experience in molecular biology. The candidate should be independent, pro-active and a team player who enjoys the challenge of a multi-disciplinary environment and will be able to assist in the development of research proposals and in the supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students.

The successful applicant will participate in a multi-disciplinary, collaborative project involving groups at Edinburgh University (Donald Salter, Consultant and Professor in OA pathology), Bart’s and the Royal London Hospital (Manoj Ramachandran, Consultant in Orthopaedics and Trauma) and QMUL (Dan Bader, Professor in Cell / Tissue Biomechanics). This is an excellent opportunity to join a dynamic team of multi-disciplinary scientists and clinicians at the three sites. Potential applicants are encouraged to contact Dr Tina Chowdhury, t.t.chowdhury@qmul.ac.uk. For more information, visit www.sems.qmul.ac.uk/staff/staff.php?t.t.chowdhury@qmul.ac.uk.

This is a full-time fixed term position funded by an ARUK research grant available at the end of July for 2 years with the possibility of career progression, depending on progress. The post is with the salary in the range of £30,350 – £33,794 per annum inclusive of London allowance.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.

For further information about the School, visit www.sems.qmul.ac.uk.

Further details and an application form can be found at www.hr.qmul.ac.uk/vacancies

Applicants should send a cover letter stating their career objectives, research interests and how their work complements the studies published by Dr Tina Chowdhury. Completed application forms together with a copy of your CV, quoting reference number 11156/CA should be returned to Mrs Jean Hefford, School of Engineering and Materials Science, Queen Mary University of London, Mile End Road, London, E1 4NS, or by e-mail to semsvacancies@qmul.ac.uk quoting the reference.

The closing date for applications is 12 noon on Friday 15th July 2011. Interviews will be held on Thursday 21 July 2011.
