Inbal Dar, Sharon Biton, Yosef Shiloh, and Ari Barzilai conducted a study on the role of the protein kinase ataxia-telangiectasia mutated (ATM) in DNA damage repair within cerebellar neurons. The research revealed that ATM, predominantly expressed in the nucleus, is activated by DNA damage induced by ionizing radiation. This activation leads to ATM's colocalization with markers of double-strand breaks and the phosphorylation of downstream targets. The findings suggest that ATM functions similarly in cerebellar neurons as it does in proliferating cells, and its failure in DNA repair processes may contribute to the loss of granule cells and Purkinje cells observed in ataxia-telangiectasia.
